What to Expect on Countertop Installation Day: A Boston Fabricator’s Walkthrough

Once you have picked your stone and signed off on a quote, the most common question we hear is simple: what actually happens now? Countertop installation is one of the smoothest parts of a kitchen project when you know the sequence, and it can feel chaotic when you do not. Here is exactly how it works at Pablo Marble and Granite, from the first measurement to the moment you run your hand along a finished edge.

It really starts before install day: templating

Your countertops are not cut from a tape-measure sketch. After your cabinets are set and level, we come out to create a template — a precise pattern of your exact layout. We capture every wall, every angle, the sink and cooktop cutouts, the overhang, and where the seams will fall.

A few things need to be ready for templating to be accurate:

  • Base cabinets installed, secured, and level
  • Your sink and faucet on site, or the exact spec sheet
  • Cooktop or range model confirmed for the cutout
  • Final decisions on edge profile and overhang

If you are still mapping out your layout, our guide to standard kitchen countertop dimensions covers the depth, height, and overhang numbers most Boston kitchens use.

In the shop: fabrication

This is the part most homeowners never see, and it is where a real fabricator earns their keep. Back at our Woburn shop, your template is laid over the actual slab so we can position the veining exactly where you want it — centered on the island, flowing across a seam, or book-matched on a waterfall edge. Then the slab is cut, the sink opening is cut and polished, the edge profile is shaped, and every piece is dry-fit before it ever leaves the building.

Because we fabricate in house instead of outsourcing, we control seam placement, edge quality, and timing. That is one of the biggest reasons to choose a fabricator who cuts their own stone.

Install day, step by step

Install day itself is usually a half-day to a full day for a typical kitchen. Here is the sequence:

  1. Old tops removed if we are replacing. We disconnect the sink and lift out the existing counters.
  2. Dry fit. The new pieces are set in place and checked for fit, level, and the reveal against your walls.
  3. Seams and adhesive. Pieces are bonded, and the seams are color-matched and tooled to all but disappear.
  4. Sink and cooktop set. Undermount sinks are secured and cutouts are confirmed against your fixtures.
  5. Final polish and walkthrough. We polish the edges, wipe everything down, and walk the finished job with you.

Reconnecting the plumbing — hooking the faucet and disposal back up — usually happens the next day, once the adhesive and any seam epoxy have fully cured.

How to prep your home

You can make install day faster and cleaner with a little prep:

  • Clear everything off the existing counters and out of the sink base cabinet
  • Make a clear path from your door to the kitchen
  • Plan for the water to be shut off for part of the day
  • Keep kids and pets out of the work zone, since there are heavy pieces moving
