Before you fall in love with a slab, it helps to know the numbers your kitchen is built around. Countertop dimensions are fairly standardized — which is good news for planning. Here are the measurements that matter when you’re laying out a new kitchen.
Countertop depth
A standard base cabinet is 24 inches deep. The countertop sits on top with a small overhang at the front, so a finished counter is typically 25.5 to 26 inches deep. That extra inch-and-a-half keeps spills off the cabinet faces and gives the edge a finished look.
Countertop height
Standard kitchen counter height is 36 inches from the floor to the top of the surface — 34.5″ of cabinet plus a roughly 1.5″ countertop. That height suits most people for standing prep work. Some homeowners raise or lower sections slightly for accessibility or for a baking zone, but 36″ is the default everything is designed for.
Overhang
- Standard front overhang: about 1 to 1.5 inches past the cabinet face.
- Seating overhang (islands & bars): plan for 12 to 15 inches of overhang so knees fit comfortably underneath. Overhangs beyond ~10–12 inches usually need support brackets or corbels, depending on the material.
Thickness
Stone and quartz slabs commonly come in two thicknesses: 2 cm (about 3/4″) and 3 cm (about 1 1/4″). Three centimeters is the most popular for kitchens — it’s strong enough to span without a plywood substrate and gives a substantial edge. A thicker look (a “mitered” or built-up edge) can be created by bonding two pieces at the edge.
Islands and backsplashes
There’s no single “standard” island size — it’s driven by your floor space — but a common rule is to leave at least 36 to 42 inches of walkway around an island so the kitchen flows. For backsplashes, a standard height is 4 inches for a short stone splash, or full-height (counter to upper cabinets, often around 18 inches) for a continuous slab look.
