If you already have white walls in the kitchen, you can go the opposite way for your cabinets and choose dark gorgeous wood for the material. Just because you go with organic material doesn’t mean it can’t be contemporary.
In fact, you can pick contemporary-styled cabinets made with dark wood that have very simplistic features. This will give your kitchen a sleek, no-mess look that’ll appear clean and polished no matter what.
If you choose this color scheme, you have some options when it comes to your backsplash. If you want it to blend in with everything else, we suggest a black or dark gray color with some interesting patterns. But if you want to continue along with the theme of stark contrasts, then choose a backsplash in a white or creme color.
2. Splashes of Color
Traditional kitchens have very rigid color schemes; if you strayed outside of them, then it’d be a huge no-no.
But nowadays, if you want your kitchen to stand out, then you have to take chances. And one of those is adding splashes of color to your kitchen that’d previously have people thinking you’re out of your mind!
For instance, you can go with a traditional kitchen with a beautiful quartz countertop and light wood cabinets. But then, you can paint your kitchen island a turquoise color, as well as your backsplash.
For those who step into your kitchen, their eyes will instantly be drawn to the pops of color on the island and backsplash. It’ll be a welcoming and refreshing change to the boring cutout kitchens everyone else has.
3. White and Gold Accents
If you want to go the route of a mainly white kitchen that looks contemporary, you can still play around with it. You don’t have to leave it completely white, as it’ll just look like you’re cooking in a hospital.
What you can do is give your white cabinets some gold accents by replacing the handles. You can also make your faucet gold, and give your kitchen island some gold strips lining the corners.
Just this small addition of gold accents can turn a cold, sterile room into a space that’s more elegant and welcoming.
You can also take a page from point #2 and add some splashes of color. For instance, you can paint your kitchen island a dark navy blue color so it’s the first thing people notice when they go into your kitchen. Or, you can buy a refrigerator that’s bright red so no one misses it.
4. Waterfall Kitchen Islands
If your kitchen previously didn’t have an island, you should strongly consider installing one in your remodel. These provide a functional space, as well as a central point people’s eyes will wander to.
While most kitchen islands have drawers for extra storage, you should think about getting a waterfall kitchen island instead. This is where the same countertop material is also used on both ends. If you choose a stunning material like quartz or marble, this can create a beautiful effect, not unlike a waterfall.
You can then place some sleek chairs underneath the island to provide a space where guests can hang out with you or where your children can do their schoolwork while you’re cooking.
Either way, you’ll create an area where you can spend time with your loved ones instead of being isolated while you slave away in the kitchen.
5. Expand Your Backsplash
For most people, they only think of the backsplash as something to protect the wall from splatters of food. But it can be so much more than that.
The backsplash is an area where you can play around with its tiles and create a beautiful sight to look at. For example, instead of only using the space where possible splatters may happen, why not expand the backsplash to the entire wall?
On that note, you should also choose tiles that have bold, eye-catching patterns. If they have metallic accents, then even better.
Not only can this make your kitchen appear more lively, but it can also make that space brighter as well. This is especially true if there are metallic accents, as they can help reflect and bounce light off.
